Prioritizing where to place the mat for best results:

Directly around the speaker

2. On the back side of door panel around the speaker grille or speaker cutout if it's flush mounted

3. Directly behind the speaker on the inside of the outer door skin
3. Directly behind the speaker on the inside of the outer door skin

Once these areas are covered the coverage expands as follows:

Flat surfaces around the speaker attachment area. Cover large holes.
